What is Mosaic Art?

Mosaic art involves putting small pieces of material together in unique patterns and shapes in order to make a larger piece of art. More than 4,000 years old, mosaic artwork has been found all over the world, and has been used to decorate everything from roadways to church ceilings. In its earliest phases, mosaic artwork was created using small terracotta cones. Over the years, mosaic artwork has evolved to make use of various materials, including ceramic tiles, small pieces of glass, and colored stones and pebbles. Mosaic patterns have now become very popular in contemporary design, and appear on everything from patio tables to bar seating.

About Mosaic Patterns
Traditionally, mosaic artwork has incorporated specific patterns and designs that express particular styles and beliefs. Early mosaic art focused on creating simple, repetitive patterns over large spaces.
